Temporary Accommodation Challenges

Updated: Dec 12, 2019

I was asked this week to be part of a BBC Asian Network Radio Program as a professional working with people accessing temporary accommodation. This follows on from Shelters Press Release that one child becomes homeless every 8 minutes.

There were to be a number of speakers with lived experience, explaining the difficulties, and a project with some solutions to the housing crisis. Hear the program here on BBC Sounds.

Women i see are struggling, when granted residence they are evicted from social service, or asylum support and are placed in temporary accommodation. For families it is often Travelodges initially, then ill-furnished Temporary houses with bare essentials. They can stay there 6-12 months while bidding on permanent accommodation. There is hope for the future though, moving out of persecution and exclusion they can have spent years facing.
